WCG will order bags of Farm Dirt Compost at a discount on February 15 for distribution Saturday, February 18. The 1 cubic foot bags of premium compost are offered to members for $7.50 per bag. The MSRP is $10 a bag at locally owned garden centers. Starting February 2, you may place your order and pay in advance (preferred). Using PayPal, pay to buildmysoil@westburycommunitygarden.org. If you cannot pay in advance or don’t use PayPal, place an order by emailing Hazel and Ray at buildmysoil@westburycommunitygarden.org, then pay when you pick up your bags Saturday, February 18. You must preorder by February 15 to obtain Farm Dirt in this special order.
How many bags should you buy?Use a soil calculator to figure how many 1 cu ft bags you need. Our garden plots are roughly 25′ x 4′. For 1″ deep, 0.3 cu yd of soil is needed, or 9 bags. For 1/2″ deep, buy 4-5 bags per bed. Is it worth it? Yes! You will see an increase in productivity over your neighbors who decide not to add Farm Dirt Compost or other equally rich, live amendments.
Using Your Compost: If you are preparing your garden after removing all old plants, add compost as generously as possible and level it over the top of the soil. Water and rain will allow the nutrients to leach into the soil. If you have already planted for the spring, generously sprinkle compost next to plants and in the rows between seedlings and water it in.
