On November 13, some of Westbury Community Garden members attended the Keep Houston Beautiful award program at The Hilton Americas. The garden received a Certificate of Recognition for the VegOut! Westbury program held each March for National Nutrition Month at the garden pavilion. VegOut! Westbury is a nutrition education event and celebration of growing, cooking and eating more vegetables, held each Saturday afternoon in March. The events are free and open to the public.
VegOut! Westbury was not alone in neighborhood organizations and projects that received accolades. Sharpstown High School National Honor Society received an Honor of Recognition for their volunteer efforts in many southwest Houston community events, including VegOut! Westbury. Brays Oaks Management District received a Certificate of Recognition. Proud Partner Awards went to Keep Westbury Beautiful Day (Westbury Civic Club) and The Arboretum Trail at Willow Water Hole (Willow Waterhole Greenspace Conservancy). A new award, Community Champion, was presented to the family of the late Donald Perkins, former Chief of Staff to District K Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum and the late CM Larry Green. Donald was particularly known for his love trees and many beautification events in District K.
