Tuesday, October 1, 2024, was the first time we’ve celebrated National Night Out (NNO) at Westbury Community Garden. We hope to make it an annual event!
National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community.
To celebrate NNO, the garden hosted a Taco Tuesday party from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, complete with beef and chicken fajita tacos, rice, beans, tortilla chips and all the fixings. We invited our neighbors at The Heights At Post Oak apartments and were pleased that some came to mingle with garden members and enjoy the tacos. We learned that the new owners at HAPO have increased safety, removed some bad actors, and are now putting in new sidewalks and other property improvements. Apartment residents seemed very happy with the improvements.
Barbara Hite, Constituent Services Director for City Council District K, presented WCG with a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of Martha Castex-Tatum, Mayor Pro Tem and District K Council Member.
Likewise, Brian Pendleton, Community Engagement Coordinator with Commissioner Lesly Briones, Harris County Precinct 4, presented a Certificate of Recognition to commemorate the event.
We were also pleased to host a large contingent from our Harris County Constables, officers from HPD South Gessner station, members of the Westbury Civic Club, and Community Affairs Advisor for Harris County Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis’ office, and the District 13 Director representing State Senator Borris Miles. We are grateful for the recognition and support from neighborhood, city, county, and state officials!
Food for the celebration was sponsored by H-E-B and Costco. Thyra Burks from State Representative Shawn Thierry’s office provided the drinks. Huge thanks to all for helping make this event such a success!
