Sunflowers Planted

Six students from Bellaire High School National Honor Society and their advisor, Ms. Jennifer Kuhleman, came out to plant sunflower seeds in the maze on February 26. The students were joined by garden members Debbie Gordon, JaMera Gilbreath, Paul SoRelle, and Betina Wolfowicz.

JaMera plants Mammoth sunflowers.

About 400 sunflower seeds were planted of the very tallest and longest maturing varieties. On March 12, volunteers will plant another round of seeds that mature a little more quickly. Other short-season types will be planted at the end of March.

The Bellaire High School National Honor Society scholars were also instrumental in preparing and laying out the weed barrier fabric in the maze configuration and mulching the walkways last fall. The maze is holding up well and only required light weeding today.

We’re looking forward to lots of tall, colorful sunflowers by mid to late May!
