On Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021 a group of gardeners planted 16 trees and 9 shrubs along the east side and a bit of the north side of the garden property. Trees For Houston brought in the trees and taught the volunteers how to plant. But the Trees For Houston crew of four did most of the planting. It was challenging. Those who took the challenge were Steve Goldberg, George Resjek, Steve Ewing, the incomparable Mike Blaha, Becky Stemper, Mary Taylor, Jamera Gillbreath, and new gardeners Nathan Barber and Vickie Mendez. The trees arrived at 8am and were all planted by 10am.
Expect to see Shumard oaks which grow straight and tall and drop their leaves in the fall after turning red. Drummond Red Maples will also turn red in the fall and drop leaves. Two Southern Magnolias will keep their shiny green leaves as will the seven Loblolly pines that were planted. In between the trees you will notice wax myrtle shrubs. As these trees and shrubs develop they should help shield the lighting from the Valero property behind the garden. But more importantly, they should be good for all kinds of birds.
Thank you, Gardeners for your hard work and thank you Trees For Houston which donated the trees, mulch, and stakes. Their mission is to continually plant trees throughout the city.
