The project for the June Community Service Day was preparing the aisles for new weedblock (cardboard) and mulch. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority / Mu Kappa Omega chapter, based in Missouri City, Disciples of Christ Church (The Woodlands) and AmeriCorps came out to volunteer their time and labor on Saturday morning at Westbury Community Garden. They worked along side 10 dedicated WCG members who also gave their Saturday morning for community service hours.
The heat was brutal but we accomplished our mission. A few remaining weedy patches were eradicated and old mulch was raked away so the aisles could be leveled and excess soil removed. A huge pile of cardboard was trimmed to fit the aisles. Next weekend we host a busload of high schoolers and adults from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ECLA) Youth Gathering who will help us lay down cardboard and mulch to cover 7300 sq ft of aisles and borders. https://www.facebook.com/youthgathering/.
Getting this huge project completed in two Saturday mornings is an ambitious undertaking. What would we do without our wonderful volunteers? I have to say we all left tired, hot and sweaty but felt really good about how the garden looks. We’re ready for Phase 2 next weekend!
